First Look - Base Metals Mixed on Weaker Dollar and Demand Concerns

  • (Dow Jones) -- Enthusiasm for base metals is being capped by persistent concerns of weaker demand. The outlook for China's economy has softened as the manufacturing activity data declined to its lowest levels in more than two years, ANZ Research analysts say in a note. The Purchasing Managers' Index figures are generally export-orientated, suggesting Chinese companies are still worried about President Trump's tariffs, ANZ says. On the other hand, Trump's doubling of steel and aluminum tariffs have provided some support for base metals as traders race to get to the U.S. ahead of fresh trade hikes.
