(Bloomberg) – Copper jumped during a broad rally for industrial metals as investors shrugged off a fresh round of US strikes on Iran to track broader gains in risk assets. The industrial metal jumped as much as 2.2% in London, erasing losses earlier in the week sparked by the escalation of the Iran conflict. Equities also rallied. The resumption of hostilities in Iran threatens to once again restrict energy supplies from the Strait of Hormuz, curbing economic growth and demand for industrial commodities. That risk has sparked choppy trading conditions in the copper market since an interim peace deal was signed last month, with investors reacting quickly to flare-ups and de-escalations between the two sides. Copper is also being supported by a slew of fundamental drivers, including a drawdown in inventories in China and supply headwinds in South America, according to Al Munro, metals strategist at Marex Group. “The fast money dominates our trading landscape, so you see a lot of these sharp intraday swings,” Munro said by phone. “Meanwhile, China continues to buy the dips.”
