(Bloomberg) – Copper dropped for a fourth day as investors weighed prospects for negotiations to end the Middle East war that’s dented the demand outlook for industrial metals. Futures were slightly down after the White House said US officials were discussing Iran’s latest proposal but maintained “red lines,” including preventing Tehran from obtaining a nuclear weapon. Most other industrial metals also declined as uncertainty over the duration of the conflict continues to drive up energy prices and threaten global growth. “Copper is highly correlated with macro markets, and in the short term, an upward breakout requires catalysts such as optimistic news from the negotiations,” Chaos Ternary Futures Co.’s research unit said in a note. In China, commodity traders were also monitoring a slowdown in physical trading activities after a sweeping crackdown by the country’s tax authorities rattled many firms struggling with severe reductions in invoicing quotas. Inventories in the country have been declining since mid-March after falling prices aided purchases from manufacturers as they returned from the Lunar New Year break. This has contributed to a newly bullish mood among traders and analysts.
